বাঙালিদের প্রধান খাদ্য ভাত। আর সেই ভাতের যোগান আমরা চাল থেকে পাই। মানে ধান থেকেই পাই। আমাদের দেশের প্রায় বেশিরভাগ জেলাতেই ধান চাষ করা হয় কমবেশি। বাংলাদেশ কৃষি গবেষণা ইনস্টিটিউট, ধানের জাত উন্নয়নে সর্বোচ্চ চেষ্টা চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে। ধান সাধারণত বৈশাখ মাস থেকেই পাকা শুরু হয়। ধান কাটাও শুরু হয় বৈশাখ থেকেই। যা চলে জৈষ্ঠ্যমাস পর্যন্ত। বাংলাদেশে উৎসবমুখর পরিবেশে ধান কাটার কথা থাকলেও, সে উৎসব যেনো বেদনার আকার নেয় প্রায় প্রতিবছর। ধান কাটা শুরুর ঠিক কয়েক দিন আগে থেকেই শুরু হয়ে যায় ঝড়-বৃষ্টি। আর সেই ঝড় ও বৃষ্টিতে ব্যাপক ক্ষতি হয় ধানের। ঝড়ের ফলে ধান গাছ জমিতে নেমে পড়ে। আর বৃষ্টির পানি ক্ষেতে জমে যাবার কারণে ধান থেকে শিকর গজিয়ে যাওয়া শুরু হয়। আর এমন ধান থেকে ভাল চাল আশাও করা যায়না। অপরদিকে ধান কাটার সময় কৃষাণ বা শ্রমিকের অভাব পড়ে যায়। ধান কাটার জন্য একজন শ্রমিক পেতে হলে, প্রায় ১২০০ টাকা থেকে ১৫০০ টাকা খরচ করতে হয় কৃষকের। যা প্রায় দেড় থেকে দুই মণ ধান বিক্রির অর্থের সমতুল্য। বাজারের বেশিরভাগ সারের দাম অত্যাধিক ! যা অনেক কৃষকের ক্রয়ক্ষমতার বাইরে চলে যায়। সারাবছর অক্লান্ত পরিশ্রম, পর্যাপ্ত আর্থিক বিনিয়োগ করার পরেও কৃষকেরা ধানের ন্যায্য মূল্য থেকে বঞ্চিত হয়। কিন্তু কেনো ? কৃষকেরা যদি তার ফসলের ন্যায্য মূল্য না পায়, তাহলে সে তো একদিন কৃষি থেকে বিদায় নিবে। যা আমাদের দেশের জন্য অকল্যাণকর।

কিছু অসাধু মিল মালিক ও মৌসুমি ধান ব্যবসায়ীদের কারণে কৃষকেরা তাদের ধানের ন্যায্য মূল্য থেকে বঞ্চিত হয় বলে আমি মনে করি। সরকারি উদ্যোগে সরাসরি কৃষকের কাছ থেকে ধান ক্রয় করা হলেও তা পর্যাপ্ত নয়। এর পরিধি বাড়াতে হবে। অনেকসময় সরকারি ধান কেনার ক্ষেত্রে নানান অনিয়মের কথা-ও উঠে আসে বিভিন্ন পত্রপত্রিকায়। বর্তমানে চালের দাম অনুপাতে ধানের দাম আমার কাছে কম মনে হয়। বাজারে মোটা চাল প্রতি কেজি বিক্রি হয় ৪৪ টাকায়। আর ভাল চাল কিনতে গেলে প্রতি কেজিতে গুনতে হয় ৬০ টাকার উপরে। অথচ ধানের দিকে লক্ষ্য করুন। ধানের মণ বিক্রি হয় ৬৫০ থেকে ৮৫০ টাকায়। ধান উৎপাদন করতে যেই পরিমাণ পরিশ্রম আর টাকা ব্যয় হয়, সেটা অন্য সফল উৎপাদন করতে হয় না। ধানের সুদিন ফিরে আসবে একদিন, সেটাই আমার প্রত্যাশা। কৃষকেরা ধানের ন্যায্য মূল্য পেলে, তাদের মুখে হাসি ফুটবে। আর সেই হাসিটাই প্রতিটি কৃষককে পুনরায় ধান চাষের দিকে অগ্রসর করবে। তাই সরকারের প্রতি আহবান জানাচ্ছি, কৃষকেরা যেনো তাদের কষ্টের ধান – ফসলের ন্যায্য মূল্য পায়, সেদিকে সুদৃষ্টি রাখুন।
